What do your customers really want from your digital marketing? Nothing.

Customers don’t actually want to be marketed to. But since it must be done, here are some good ideas for ways to use digital marketing, without annoying the customer.

DON'T BE CREEPY

Have you ever looked at someone online, say a pair of polka-dot rain boots, and then suddenly every other ad on every other website is for rain boots? It’s true that following cookies or pixels can be very useful, they are also creepy to the customer. Don’t be too aggressive in your efforts and risk alienating the customer.

For instance, most people have heard the story about how Target figured out a teenage girl was pregnant before her father did. This is the perfect example of a store collecting a fascinating amount of data, but using it in a very creepy way.

USE THE RIGHT CHANNELS

Once you know what it is you want to say to your audience, you need to know where to say it, and then tweak it to make sure your message fits the medium. Where is your target audience? For authors, they are everywhere, hiding in plain sight. But very specifically, avid readers are on GoodReads. Remember to use all of the tools at your disposal- Facebook, Twitter, email, in-person, posters, Periscope, and so much more. On Periscope you will have to be explain yourself more than you will on Twitter. Facebook and posters will be more visually oriented. Usually, the best approach will be a combination of tools across marketing, sales, and customer service.

CUSTOMERS ARE PEOPLE TOO

Customers want to be treated like human beings, even if the interaction is happening through the medium of a mobile device or computer screen. Be yourself. Speak and write naturally. And speak with the authority that you know your audience (because you do).
